Senecio rowleyanus, commonly known as String of Pearls, is a trailing succulent lined with small pea-shaped leaves. These leaves have a small pointed tip that has translucent stripes. These stripes are known as ‘epidermal windows’ – this allows increases the area available for photosynthesis. The stems will root at the nodes which can root where they touch soil to form dense mats, these stems can trail up to 90cm. Bush-like clusters of small white flowers bloom in Summer. String of Pearls tends to grow under bushes or between rocks which gives it protection from harsh sunlight. This plant looks best in hanging baskets!
