Bio balls are generally located in the bottom of the filter. They provide an extremely high surface area for the good bacteria to colonise. This beneficial bacteria helps to clean the water and converts toxins such as ammonia and nitrite into a safe form. Bio balls can get pretty mucky but they shouldn't be cleaned on a regular basis. If they get really bad you can use a bucket of the pond water to rinse them in. If you use straight tap water on the bio balls you will kill all your good bacteria. After cleaning the bio balls, it is recommended to use clarifier bacteria to replace any beneficial bacteria they may have been lost during the clean. Our bio balls come packaged within a string bag. You can place them within the filter in the string bag for easy removal.
