Silver Perch are a popular fish used for aquaponics as they are great all year round, although their growth slows down in Winter. It can take about 18 months to get to a decent eating size.
Silver Perch can be an aggressive fish, so we do not suggest mixing them in with other species unless they have plenty of room in a large pond. We have put Silver Perch in with Koi before and found that Koi could hold their own. It also depends on how much space you have in the pond. Koi also tend to stick to the top of the pond whereas the Silver Perch tend to stay towards the bottom.
Feeding: Feed Silver Perch High Protein Pellets for maximum growth. We also have a specialty formulated Sinking Silver Perch Pellet that is suitable. Silver Perch will also feed on algae, plants and insects within the pond and they are keen on duckweed which is very healthy for them.
Reproduction: Silver Perch will generally spawn with a rise in water temperature above 23°C. Females can lay up to 160,000 non-adhesive floating eggs, which hatch withing 36 hours. However they generally do not breed easily in standard size ponds.
Introducing Fish: Make sure you have put a Water Conditioner/Chlorine Neutraliser into your new pond before introducing fish. We suggest to not overstock a new pond with fish too soon, the water needs time to balance and age. If you have just filled the pond, you will need to wait at least a week or two before introducing fish!! Keep an eye on new fish for the first few hours after they have been released into the pond to make sure they are settling in well.
