Dracaenas are members of the ancient dragon tree family that produce stunning sword-like leaves. This particular variety, marginata, produces narrow, bright green leaves that are bordered by deep red margins. Dracaena marginata is an ideal feature plant either indoors or outdoors. It is also suited to mass plantings, or large patio pots and containers. Plant Dracaena marginata in an area of full sun to shade, with well drained soil. It copes with reasonably cold winters, but not frost and grows best in tropical and subtropical gardens. Dracaena marginata is a low maintenance plant. Prune the stems in spring to encourage better branching. Water well when the soil surface is dry and apply a liquid fertiliser throughout the growing season. Dracaena marginata can grow to a height of 6 metres and a width of 3 metres.
