Senecio herreanus, commonly known as String of Beans, is a trailing succulent lined with small bean-shaped leaves. These leaves are green and have a translucent stripes. These stripes are known as ‘epidermal windows’ – this allows increases the area available for photosynthesis. The stems will root at the nodes which can root where they touch soil to form dense mats, these stems can trail up to 90cm. Bush-like clusters of small white flowers bloom in Summer. String of Beans tends to grow under bushes or between rocks which gives it protection from harsh sunlight. This plant looks best in hanging baskets!
