Carbon is a great addition to the pond as it does an amazing job at removing a number of organic compounds such as tannin, which can create a brown or yellowish colour to pond water. Other organic compounds can cause this discolouration or even horrible odours and can affect the health of the fish.
Ponds may be contaminated from a variety of garden and household products such as mosquito/fly/spider repllents, weed killers or paint. Carbon is fantastic at absorbing these toxic byproducts and keeping your fish and their environment healthy.
If you are adding medications to your pond, you may need to remove any carbon within the pond. Carbon is very good at absorption and may have an effect on fish treatments.
Carbon does not remove ammonia from the pond but will remove the organic compounds that aid in the production of ammonia. Therefore, carbon will reduce the production of ammonia.
Carbon does not remove algae (blanket-weed or green water) or sludge.
Dosage: The dosage of carbon will vary depending on the condition of the pond. As a general rule you can use a 1kg per 1000L of water. A higher dosage can be used in extreme conditions. Carbon works best when placed in an area with high flow (In a filter or under a waterfall). Carbon should be placed within a mesh bag or stocking to allow flow through and to stop it from dispersing in the pond. Carbon should be replaced every 3 months.
TO CALCULATE APPROXIMATE POND CAPACITY:
